When Is Wine Appropriate?

There are a multitude of occasions when having wine could be considered appropriate. This is why so many people are now consuming more of the drink than ever before. It is something that is widely popular and should be enjoyed. It is fine for anything from weddings to simply informal gatherings of friends. You don’t even really need to ask if you should bring wine. Just make sure that you have some ready to go for your next social gathering.

Should I Make Sure To Bring Extra Wine?

Yes. Go ahead and order extra wine. As mentioned above, the drink is widely popular. It is often hard to predict how much of it will be consumed at any given social gathering. This is why it is important that you order extra wine for your next gathering. Even if you don’t end up using it all, when you order extra wine you will have some left over for yourself. After all, who says that you have to be at a social gathering to enjoy your wine. There are many people who like to have a glass of it to unwind after a stressful day. There is also some scientific research that says that this drink may actually be good for your health.

How Do I Do It?

To order extra wine, you simply need to place an order ahead. This means that you are going to inform whoever you usually buy your wine from that you are going to be placing a large order ahead of time. This gives them the needed time to make sure that they have the amount of the product that you need. It is a simply gesture that will enable you to get all of the extra wine that you need.

Wine is a fantastic compliment to many main dishes and is an especially important component for romantic dinners. Choosing the right wine can seem overwhelming at times. How does a person know when to order the wine and which wine to choose? The following paragraphs will discuss some important tips regarding when and how to order wine.

When To Order Wine

Generally speaking, waiters take orders for drinks the first time they visit a table. It is perfectly appropriate to order wine at this time. If the diners do not know what type of entree they will be enjoying, it may be best to order water first. After the type of entree is decided upon, the wine can be chosen and ordered accordingly. This is important for optimal flavor and enjoyment, since certain types of wine go best with red or white meats.

Pair With Entree

It may be beneficial to memorize what types of wine go best with various main dishes. Generally speaking, red wines go nicely with meat dishes, especially red meat. Seafood or chicken is best paired with a light and crisp chardonnay or even a blush wine, which goes nicely with any type of dish.

Ordering Wine For Special Events

In cases where an individual may be surprising their date at the end of a meal, such as with a marriage proposal, it is best to hold off on ordering wine until they are ready to reveal the surprise. Discreetly asking for a nice bottle of wine to be sent to the table after the meal has been completed is a sweet, romantic touch that will add to the special moment and create lasting memories.

Various combinations of travel mode and trip cost can be created for a person’s pleasure, as well as the size of the pocketbook. Napa wine tours can range anywhere from free to extravagantly expensive.

Free and Cheap Napa Wine Tours

Free tours generally involve walking a one to four mile distance. Wine tasting can be experienced at free spots along the way. If a person brings his own bike, then cycling is another free possibility. Cheap wine tasting can be done at a variety of places. The report is that these places are not very acceptable. The wine is of a cheap quality. The bread and cheese dipping might still be of value. A person driving himself through wine country can also be a cheap way to see the sights and partake of whatever quality wine might be desired. There are winery tours including wine tasting available for $20 that some people enjoy.

Moderately Priced Napa Wine Tours

Shuttle buses with sight-seeing tour guides are available. These busses go to various locations. Frequently wine and cheese can then be obtained for $10. Moderately priced bus tours usually begin at $75 for one adult and $49 for one child. Most shuttle bus tours include free lunch and wine tasting. They even include hotel pick-up service. The bus generally stops at four or five wineries.

High Priced Napa Valley Wine Tours

These tours generally involve a limousine, expensive wines, winery tours and possibly a return boat trip across the San Francisco Bay at sunset. Limousine wine tasting tours can range from $99 to a very high priced tour costing $1,000 or more.

Should I Order White Wine Or Red?

When dieting people closely watch their calories and are especially concerned with consuming wine and other alcoholic beverage since they contain “empty calories.” Empty calories are foods and beverages that contain little-to-no nutritional benefits. Wine is considered an empty calorie beverage so it is understandable that people would like to know whether white wine has fewer calories than red.

The simple answer is yes, on average the difference between a typical 5-ounce serving of white wine and red is between 5-10 calories. So while drinking white wine will be marginally better the difference is minuscule. A glass of the popular white wine, Chardonnay, has about 120 calories while the same size glass of Cabernet Sauvignon will typically be 127 calories.

Other Wine Characteristics To Consider

A better way to determine calories is alcohol content. Just remember that the higher the alcohol content, the more calories a wine contains. Sugar content is also an important factor so pay attention to sweetness of the wine. The sweeter the wine, the higher the sugar content and thus the calories contained within. Muscato, a popular sweet white wine typically has 150-160 calories per 5-ounce serving. Another dessert wine favorite, Port, can have upwards of 185 calories per serving.

Consider The Heath Benefits of Red Wine

The minuscule difference in calorie content between white wine and red wine is hardly enough to fret over and when you take the health benefits of red wine into account the extra calories seem even more insignificant. Red wine contains heart healthy antioxidants which many doctors believe helps increase good cholesterol.

So while white wine does have fewer calories, as long as you are drinking in moderation, the difference is very small. If you prefer red to white wine go ahead and enjoy that glass of Zinfandel and cut the additional 7 calories elsewhere in your diet.

Simplify Your Confusion

Wine is a complementary ingredient for a wide variety of foods. In fact wine is a staple to any trained chef. But for the cook who hasn’t gone to culinary school it can be a tricky ingredient to work with. White wine, in particular, can make one’s head spin. Which wine is the right one? Many recipes that call for it simply say ‘white wine’ causing a novice to risk picking the wrong variety and creating an off-putting flavor to an otherwise delicious dish. Wine is meant to enhance the flavor of a dish creating a slight aromatic flavor. During the cooking process alcohol and sulfites are cooked out leaving just a hint of flavor and a sophisticated polish.

The Basics of Wine

The first rule of cooking with white wine is to use one that you like to drink. If you use a wine you do not like it is safe to say that will not like the dish. If you are inexperienced with white wine Sauvingnon Blanc is a good choice. If you are more experienced with wine a Chardonnay is also a good choice but will be a bit more acidic.

What Not To Do

Using cooking wine is not recommended to actually cook with. Cooking wines contain added ingredients that can affect the flavor of your food. The other major don’t is to use too much or too little. Too much wine will overpower the flavor of the other ingredients. If you use too little it won’t be noticed in the dish making the use of wine pointless.

If you’re wondering which one is better, red or white wine then look no further. You are in good company with either choice. Although red and white wine are made differently studies show that the natural antioxidant power of grapes in both varieties are equally beneficial. Both men and women can enjoy a glass or two everyday and reap the benefits. Its important however not to drink to much as this could defeat the positive attributes that wine has to offer. People with certain ailments may want to avoid wine altogether.

Red Wine Is Good For The Heart!

The process for making red wine is slightly different than that of making white wine. The grape pulp and skin are allowed to ferment together in red wine. This is not the case in white wine. The grape skin contains an antioxidant called resveratrol which has been proven to thin the blood, heighten good cholesterol and prevent plaque build up in the arteries, making it easier for the heart to function better. Red wines however have been known to cause more headaches than whites.

White Wines May Be Good For The Lungs!

A study done in New York shows that the special make-up of antioxidants in white wines support healthy lung function. The lungs are especially vulnerable to free radical and cell damage. White wines have smaller antioxidant molecules than those in red wine and so are more able to penetrate into the lungs and protect against free radical damage. White wines however contain more sulfates than reds. Certain people may be allergic to sulfides. Both are good choices in moderation.
